About Us

The China Cabinet Ranch is located west of I-10 in the rural neighborhood of Picture Rocks, so named for the petroglyphs from 1,200 AD by the Hohokam in this area. Just a 20-minutes into town, there are only a few stores nearby. The last half-mile is a dirt road, and you won’t hear any traffic out here. The CCR is surrounded by desert with plenty of wildlife including coyote serenades at sunset. The owner is a friendly, retired Spanish teacher, Certified Tucson Ambassador,  and has owned and worked with horses for over 40 years as a wrangler, stable hand, CHA-certified Western riding instructor, and facilitator with EAGALA Equine Therapy. She is also certified in Outdoor, Equine, and Canine first aid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you recommend to go out?

If you want something close, there’s a Guadalajara Grill, Boston’s, and Chili’s off Cortaro Rd near the Walmart. If you like Mexican food, there’s La Parilla Suiza, Nana’s, and El Molinito on Ina Rd. Don’t forget to try a prickly pear margarita while you’re here! There are several good steakhouses in Tucson including Hi Falutin’ and El Corral. For Italian, go to Guiseppe’s, and for Japanese, everyone likes Mr.Ans Teppanyaki Steak and Seafood. For those who want a cocktail or a little night life, Laura recommends Monterrey Court, Catalina Brewery, The Union House Restaurant, and Rockabilly’s Grill.

What things are there to see nearby?

The Arizona Sonora Desert Museum is outdoors and is the 8th-best zoo in the country and also has a botanical garden. It only has plants and animals from the Sonoran Desert. It’s Tucson’s #1 attraction, a “must-see” for sure. There are also Old Tucson Studios (where they have reenactments and many great westerns were made). On the way, you can also stop at the Saguaro National Park’s Visitor’s Center. The Tucson Museum of Art, Diana Maderas Gallery, and DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun are great for art lovers. If you’re interested in history, the Arizona History Museum and the Arizona State Museum are both right on the University of Arizona Campus. There are also lots of great places within a 2-hour drive such as Kitt Peak, Mount Lemmon, Sonoita’s vineyards, Tubac, and Oracle.

What if I need supplies or a veterinarian?

There are two feed stores and two vets within 8 miles. Within 3 miles are two Dollar Stores, a Subway, Ace Hardware, two gas stations, and a “dive bar.” You’ll need to go “into town” for other things, but it’s only 10 miles through beautiful Saguaro NP to get there!

Do you have weekly or monthly rates?

Yes. Stay 5 nights and get one free; stay one month and get one week free. A 50% deposit is required for all stays over 3 days and payment can be made by check, Zelle, or Venmo. We are closed from May 31st through October 1st . The Airbnb room already has discounts for longer stays in place.

Can you ride right from the ranch?

Yes, there are 4 trails right off the property. But if you’d like to stay longer and haul to other trailheads within 15-40 minutes, there is a 2H gooseneck slant for rent at $20/day to get to Tortilita Preserve, Tucson Mountain Park, Irvington Trailhead, Camino del Cerro, the Santa Cruz River, Catalina State Park, and Sweetwater Preserve along with other trailheads in Saguaro NP.

How many horses can you accommodate? And how many horse campers?

There is one 60’ round pen which is attached to a 24’ x 24’ semi-covered pen with a gate that can be closed between them. There is also a separate 12’ x 24’ uncovered pen. I’ve had as many as 8 horses in the round pen for overnight transporters. There is one RV hookup and room for three trailers out back for dry camping.

Are there snakes on the ranch?

Of course, because the China Cabinet Ranch is next to Saguaro National Park. The good thing is that you don’t usually see them, and if it’s a rattler, you will hear it before you’ll see it most likely. There are also javelina, jackrabbits and cottontails, mule and Coues deer, bobcats, mountain lions, and even the elusive Gila Monster and Desert Tortoise. In reality, chances are low that you will see any critters except for lizards, the Desert Iguana, jackrabbits, and cottontails, although you’ll hear coyotes probably every night.
